The 'Stranger Things' actress behind Eleven doesn't love eating tons of Eggo waffles

Eleven and eggo waffles Stranger Things Netflix Millie Bobby Brown

New York Comic Con got a dose of "Stranger Things" when actors Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) and David Harbour (Chief Hopper) stopped by for a panel discussion about their hit Netflix series.

Comic Con was crawling with Eleven cosplayers this year, and most of them were carrying the young girl's favorite food: Eggo waffles. But when a fan asked Brown about her true feelings on the popular breakfast food, her response was a bit of a let down.

"I like them, I do," Brown began. "But I do not like how many I eat. You see — the amount I eat is actually really hard to digest."

David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown New York Comic Con 2016 Stranger Things

She continued, explaining that though she did have a spit bucket on set (relieving her of the requirement to actually eat all the waffles) it didn't always help. "You still have to put it in your mouth," Brown said. "[The waffle] does taste really nice but not like 15 times in a row. I do like the blueberry flavor."

Then Harbour chimed in, taking a sip of coffee while wearing his "Hawking Police Department" T-shirt underneath a blazer — just like his character Chief Hopper might do.

"I will say that I like every single cigarette I smoke," he said grinning.

The audience erupted in cheers while Brown playfully punched Harbour on the shoulder, admonishing him for smoking. Though it's sad to know Brown can't stomach Eggos in quite the same fashion as Eleven, at least we know Harbour is basically a real-life Hopper.

An evangelical college group is threatening to fire employees who support same-sex marriage

One of the biggest evangelical Christian college organizations in the country has recently told its staffers that they’ll be fired if they express support for same-sex marriage, divorce or premarital sex.

The 1300 staffers of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship USA—a group with branches on 667 college campuses around the country—received a letter from the organization’s management telling them their jobs will be terminated if they come forward to express opinions that contradict its positions on sexuality, Time reported this week.

“If they disagree, we trust that they will alert their supervisors and conclude their work,” the letter reads, according to TheDaily News. “The news may be hard, like many other aspects of following Jesus, but it is good for all people.”

The letter refers to a position paper which clearly defines “healthy human sexuality” as being strictly between a husband and wife:

Position letter

One former staffer at Mills College, Bianca Louie, told Time she decided to leave a few months ago when she realized the policy change was coming. Louie was part of a group of staffers who tried unsuccessfully to dissuade the organization from moving ahead with the policy.

“I don’t know how InterVarsity can do ministry on campus with integrity anymore,” she told the magazine. “Mills is a women’s college with inclusive trans policies, and higher ed is overall making more efforts to be inclusive and safe for LGBTQ students … I could see us getting kicked off campus because of this.”

A spokesperson for the group told The Daily News he expects that some current employees of the organization will find themselves at odds with the explicitly stated position against same-sex marriage.

“We recognize employees who disagree or whose beliefs have changed over time will leave us because we have clarified our position,” Greg Jao, InterVarsity’s vice president of campus engagement, told the newspaper.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship USA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An oil company struck oil where nobody thought to look and its stock skyrocketed

0

oil drillingWhat happened

Shares of Apache skyrocketed nearly 30% last month after the company announced the massive Alpine High oil discovery in Texas while analysts and OPEC added more fuel to the fire.

So what

In early September, Apache announced the discovery of a significant new oil discovery in the Permian Basin.

The 3 billion barrel discovery sits in a location that the industry did not think contained that much recoverable oil.

However, Apache found that it not only contained billions of barrels of oil but that it was easily recoverable and highly economic at current prices.

Alpine High is being called a "game changer" for the company. Initial conservative estimates peg the value of the discovery at $8 billion, while the company says it could be worth 10 times that amount. Either way, that is a lot of value creation potential for a $33 billion company.

While several analysts are skeptical of Alpine High, analysts at Atlantic Equities and Wolfe Research upgraded Apache's stock as a direct result of the discovery. Atlantic Equities called it a "world-class resource play" that the company picked up for a very modest price of $1,300 an acre while rivals are paying more than 10 times that amount for similar acreage in Texas' Permian Basin.

oil drill pump

For comparison's sake, Pioneer Natural Resources paid Devon Energy $15,500 an acre for some of its acreage on the other side of the Permian. Overall, Pioneer Natural Resources recently spent $435 million to acquire an estimated 150 future drilling locations in the Wolfcamp B formation, which is where it drills its most productive wells.

Meanwhile, late last year Devon Energy paid more than $600 million, or $2,300 an acre, for 500 development-ready well locations in the Rockies even though it has no intention of drilling on this acreage until oil prices improve.

Contrast this with Apache, which only paid about $400 million for land that it believes holds 2,000 to 3,000 drilling locations across at least three intervals of shale that can earn returns as good as those of Pioneer can earn on its newly acquired acreage.

As if the high from the Alpine discovery were not enough, OPEC agreed to cut and cap its output in September, which pushed oil prices and oil stocks higher. That agreement, which it has yet to formalize, could result in the glut of oil on the market coming to an end, which should push prices higher. That would be great news for Apache because it would not only boost its cash flow from legacy wells but increase returns for new wells.

Now what

Apache believes that it is sitting on an incredible amount of recoverable hydrocarbons, which could fuel significant production growth in the coming years. That growth could be increasingly profitable if OPEC follows through on its output cut. It is a combination that could fuel compelling returns for investors over the next few years.

This brilliant Mystique costume stunned everyone at New York Comic Con

0
0

New York Comic Con is often home to some of the most imaginative cosplays around. While we've seen some pretty incredible cosplay, there was one woman's take on X-Men's Mystique that dominated the conversation on Friday, October 7. Rebecca Lindsey crafted what many are calling the most incredible cosplay they've ever seen.

The costume — a hybrid of a green army uniform and a bedazzled blue bodysuit — was photographed by Jody Houser and posted to Instagram around noon on the second day of NYCC. Within hours the image had made its way to Reddit, Imgur, Twitter, and beyond.

Behold the piece of cosplay art for yourself:

A photo posted by Jody Houser (@mindeclipse) on

Lindsey's Mystique cosplay has now been viewed over 5 million times on Imgur, and received thousands of upvotes on various Reddit threads. Everyone agrees — the outfit is impressively creative and stunning.

A blog called "Cosplay in America" spotted Lindsey on the floor of NYCC, and interviewed her to learn more about the costume's creation.

"Making it was tough and I totally had my mom sew me in to the thing and help glue on the sequins," Lindsey told Cosplay in America. "I used an army costume from Ebay and a cheapo body suit from Amazon. We just cut off the extra and sewed the uniform on top of the blue. The sequins helped cover up all the seems. I also used two wigs and sewed those things together (so tough!!!) and sprayed the mystique hair bright red."

Surprisingly, Lindsey says she's only been cosplaying for two years, despite attending NYCC for the last seven. You can find her on Facebook at "Rebecca Lindsey — Lots of Art." In addition to her Mystique costume, she has photos of a Catwoman outfit she made for the first day of this year's NYCC.

Fellow congoers will have to try and spot Lindsey again during the subsequent days to see what else she comes up with, but in the meantime we shall all bask in the glory of her brilliant Mystique.

Shifting trends and priorities are set to transform the growing mPOS ecosystem

0
0

mpos forecast_final

When mobile-point-of-sale (mPOS) devices first entered the market, they were extremely disruptive, because they provided an attractive, accessible, and affordable ways for merchants of all types to begin accepting card payments easily.

Now that consumers expect cards to be accepted everywhere they shop, demand for the devices is as high as ever.

That has pushed mPOS firms to recalibrate their strategies. They're increasingly targeting small retailers, moving beyond the individual sellers that spurred their initial growth. They're also turning to value-added services, like working capital programs, business management tools and software, data services, or e-commerce integration, to make money. And they're turning to value-added services, like working capital programs and business-management tools that carry additional fees that can build new revenue streams for these providers.

The shift to chip-enabled payment cards in the US has been a big driver of business for mPOS firms, because their devices are far less expensive than those offered their legacy competitors. That’s leading new types of sellers to mPOS firms — but it’s coming at a loss, because card readers are a great acquisition channel, but a poor profit generator. Software and services are stepping in to fill the gap.

A report from BI Intelligence forecasts growth of the mPOS market through 2021 and examines the trends that are pushing merchants to adopt the technology. It looks at how mPOS providers are competing for cost-conscious sellers and details the strategies they're pursuing to capitalize on demand for their solutions. And it explores how legacy POS firms are responding and providing mobile solutions of their own.

Here are some key takeaways from the report:

  • Retailers are the key group driving the growth of the mPOS ecosystem.  They do more business than micromerchants, invest in more services, and are likely to be more loyal clients, making them the most lucrative and reliable option for mPOS firms.
  • Hardware upgrades will be a core driver of mPOS usage. Upgrading to EMV is expensive, and as a result, many merchants have opted to avoid making the switch. But as chip cards become more common, the fraud benefits that EMV provides are starting to appeal to merchants. This is driving retailers to mPOS firms, as the solutions they provide are fairly easy to implement, and largely affordable.
  • But value-added services will be the biggest contributors to mPOS firms' success. These tools tie merchants closely to the product and keep them loyal, while generating additional sources of revenue for mPOS providers.

In full, the report:

  • Forecasts the number of mPOS devices in circulation in the US through 2021 and assesses drivers behind that growth.
  • Explains the sub-sectors of the mPOS ecosystem and determines why retailers are the biggest drivers of growth.
  • Assesses the impact of the US EMV shift as a major catalyst for mPOS usage in the US.
  • Provides details different channels that mPOS firms are using for growth.
  • Evaluates the ways customer acquisition segments of business differ from profit-generating measures.
  • And much more.

The floodgates are opening with prominent Republicans calling on Trump to step down

Donald Trump

Calls for Donald Trump to remove himself from the presidential race rushed in late Friday and into Saturday morning from prominent Republican officials.

The last couple weeks for the real-estate businessman have gone from disappointing to near-apocalyptic.

Now, a bombshell audio recording that is shaping up to be the GOP nominee's biggest campaign scandal has forced some Republicans to hit the panic button.

GOP Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois said on Friday Trump "should drop out" and the Republican National Committee "should engage rules for emergency replacement."

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, whom Trump recently named as a potential Supreme Court nominee, echoed Kirk.

"I wouldn't hire that person," Lee said, referring to Trump in a video posted to Facebook.

Here's more from Lee:

"The fact is, we have been asked to settle ... on matters of great principle with our candidate for president of the United States. This can't continue. ... It is for that reason, Mr. Trump, that I respectfully ask you ... to step aside. Step down. Allow someone else to carry the banner of these principles."

Mike Lee Utah

Three-term Republican Gov. of New York and former 2016 presidential candidate George Pataki tweeted: "[Trump's] campaign is a poisonous mix of bigotry and ignorance. Enough! He needs to step down."

A.J. Spiker, a former Iowa GOP chair and adviser to Sen. Rand Paul's PAC, said Trump was "unfit for public office.""Donald Trump should resign as the Republican nominee for president," he tweeted

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman also said Trump should drop out of the race, The Salt Lake City Tribune reported. Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock of Virginia said Trump "should step aside and allow our party to replace him."

"This is disgusting, vile, and disqualifying. No woman should ever be subjected to this type of obscene behavior and it is unbecoming of anybody seeking high office," Comstock said in her statement.

Rebecca Harrington, Allan Smith, and Brett LoGiurato contributed to this report.

The 5 healthiest countries in the world are mainly from Europe

Japan runners

The healthiest five countries in the world all received the same score when the World Economic Forum ranked 138 countries for their health.

Every year, WEF releases its Global Competitiveness Report on the state of the world's economies.

The WEF looks at data on areas as varied as the soundness of banks to the sophistication of businesses in each country. It then uses the data to compile a picture of the economy of almost every country on earth.

But it does not just look at the financial health of countries, it also looks at the physical health.

WEF looked at 138 countries' life expectancy, infant mortality, the business impact of HIV/AIDS, HIV prevalence, as well as several other data points on prevalence of tuberculosis and other diseases.

It then scored each country out of 1-7. 1 being the most unhealthy and 7 being the healthiest.

The five countries that received a perfect score of 7 were:

  • Japan
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Iceland

"A healthy workforce is vital to a country’s competitiveness and productivity," said WEF in the report.

"Workers who are ill cannot function to their potential and will be less productive. Poor health leads to significant costs to business, as sick workers are often absent or operate at lower levels of efficiency. Investment in the provision of health services is thus critical for clear economic, as well as moral, considerations.

"In addition to health, this pillar takes into account the quantity and quality of the basic education received by the population, which is increasingly important in today’s economy."

The flash-crash is just the beginning of the pound's decline — it's going to get so much worse

The pound's flash crash early on Friday morning— where it suddenly dropped 6% in two minutes for no obvious reason — is just the beginning. It is going to get so much worse.

Most people in Britain have no clue. They think things are going great!

We've got full employment, low inflation, and the dip in sterling since the June Brexit vote has boosted our exports. Recent macro data on services, manufacturing and retail sales show the economy is in good shape.

What's not to like?

The problem is that the reality of Brexit has barely begun to sink in yet. When it does, the economy will be hobbled and the pound will sink ever lower. That will make imports more expensive, squeezing corporate margins. Expect companies to get those margins back by laying off workers, making the economy even smaller, further weakening the pound.

The current strength we're enjoying from exports will disappear — we can't export to a market we are not part of. And the loss of the customs union will increase tariffs, barriers, and bureaucracy for UK companies trying to sell goods in Europe. The economic cost of those tariffs may be 10-15%, according to HSBC economist Douglas Lippoldt.

So we will be trading at a disadvantage to Europe in a currency worth much less.

Foreign investment will thus flee — especially when the UK loses its access to the EU Single Market. Already major corporations are warning that they will leave Britain once Brexit occurs:

There are dozens more examples.

The smart money believes Brexit will cut UK GDP growth from 2% to 1% next year. So currency speculators are betting against the pound on that basis. They think Brexit will make the UK weaker, not stronger.

pound

Analyst notes coming out of The City on Friday, on the topic of the flash crash, were brutal and unanimous. They are almost not concerned about the flash crash because they see it as a predictable part of a longer trend in which the pound just gets weaker and weaker. Here is Tom Fitzpatrick and his team at Citi:

"Random. Should probably be dismissed as a freak event, right? – No. ... Wherever we go from here in terms of the UK economy, UKEU negotiations, timing of Article 50, the Bank of England, the USD trend, or any other related issue, a test of that alltime low cannot be written off."—

Sam Underwood, also at Citi, signed off his note with this meme graphic:

anchorman well that escalated quickly

Analysts expect the pound to fall to $1.10 against the US dollar and reach parity with the euro. Bear in mind that the night of the referendum, the pound could buy $1.50.

Welcome to the new reality of Brexit. We're living in a country that has chosen to leave a barrier-free market, chosen to devalue its currency, and chosen, possibly, to go into a recession.

British people used to enjoy going shopping in New York because it was so cheap. Those days are over. Unless, by some miracle, Britain backs out of Brexit in March 2017, things in the UK are going to get worse, quickly.

Cholera has killed at least 13 people in Haiti after Hurricane Matthew

PORT-AU-PRINCE/LES CAYES, Haiti (Reuters) - Cholera has killed at least 13 people in southwest Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, government officials told Reuters on Saturday, as health workers sought to reach the epicenter of one outbreak.

Six people died of Cholera in a hospital in the southern town of Randel, which is inland near a river, and another seven died in the western coastal town of Anse-d´Ainault, the officials said, likely as flood waters mixed with sewage.

"Randel is isolated, you must cross water, you must go high in the mountains, cars cannot go, motorcycles cannot go,” said Eli Pierre Celestin, a member of team that fights Cholera for the health ministry. "People have started dying."

"There are nurses but no doctors," he said, concerned that Cholera would spread due to lack of hygiene and as ground water moved because of rain and floods.

He said there were also outbreaks in Port-a-Piment and Les Anglais.

Cholera causes severe diarrhea and can kill within hours if untreated. It is spread through contaminated water and has a short incubation period, which leads to rapid outbreaks.

Hurricane Matthew left almost 900 people dead in Haiti and caused major flooding and loss of livestock.

It slammed into South Carolina on Saturday, after skirting the Atlantic coast of Florida and Georgia, causing widespread power outages and flooding.

Dr. Donald Francois, head of the Haitian health ministry´s cholera program, said 62 others were sick with Cholera as a result of the storm.

"We are concerned about these new outbreaks of Cholera we are seeing in new districts," he told Reuters. "The situation is particularly difficult in Randel and (nearby) Port-a-Piment."

"I am on my way to the south region to assess the situation and ensure all the necessary measures are in place," he said, adding that he had heard unconfirmed reports that as many as 50 people may have died from Cholera in southern Haiti.

The aid group Doctors Without Borders scrambled teams by helicopter to southern Haiti to respond to Cholera cases.

Clifford Gauther, the health ministry´s director for Haiti´s Sud Department, said Cholera treatment centers, many made of metal sheeting, were destroyed by the hurricane. The ministry was rebuilding them.

"Almost every October we have a spike (in Cholera cases), but this time it's worse, 70 to 80 cases,” he said.

Before the hurricane struck, the Central Emergency Response Fund released a loan of $8 million to UNICEF, the United Nations Childrens' Fund, to ramp up the response to a worsening Cholera epidemic in Haiti.

"In 2016 almost 27,000 Cholera cases have been reported in Haiti, and over 240 people have died. Hurricane Matthew is feared to significantly worsen the situation and increase the risk of a larger outbreak," CERF said in a statement on Friday.

It was hot and sunny on Saturday in Les Cayes in southern Haiti. Flood waters receded and residents cleared some debris from the streets. One man was putting up a tarpaulin over his exposed roof.

As the shock of the storm wore off, the enormity of the damage was beginning to sink in.

"I have land but I don't have a house anymore. It's starting to traumatize me, my head hurts. I think about it too much," said Jean Vinel Joseph, 36, a medical orderly.

I tried out Amazon’s best-selling waterproof phone case to see if it was worth the hype — and I was amazed at how well it worked

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships so we may get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

spin_prod_915605712When I was 13, my digital camera fell into a lake and I was left without a camera for months. For a teenage girl in the early aughts, it was a nightmare. Since my phone stores a lot more than just photos, I've always vowed to keep it far away from any body of water.

Until now, that is. I was initially suspicious of Joto's Universal Underwater Case, which looks like a slightly more durable plastic bag. But after seeing its nearly 16,000 rave reviews on Amazon (it currently holds a 4.6/5 star rating), I purchased one for a recent beach vacation, and I was amazed at how well it worked.

The case is made up of a clear bag, two surprisingly sturdy locks, and a handy wrist strap, so you can easily hold onto your phone while swimming. And it's compatible with virtually every smartphone on the market, from the latest iPhone 7 to tons of Android phones.

Though it is waterproof, I recommend testing the case before tossing your expensive phone into the water. An easy way to do this is by filling your case with a napkin or paper towel and submerging it in water. If your napkin remains dry, you can safely deduct your phone will stay dry, too.

During my vacation, my phone stayed dry and secure in the case, and it was able to capture some solid Kodak moments. As a bonus, the case is touchscreen-friendly, so you can tap and swipe without compromising your phone's safety. Considering most waterproof cases do the same thing and cost more, this was $8 very well spent.

The case can get foggy and your pictures may not look as clear. A lot of Amazon users shared hacks for preventing this, but sometimes all your case needs is a quick clean.

While I'd spring for a disposable underwater camera— or forgo my phone altogether — for riskier excursions, this affordable case is worth picking up if you want to capture some great memories by the beach or pool.

'It's sexual assault': Joe Biden issues scathing rebuke to Trump

joe biden

Vice President Joe Biden slammed Donald Trump on Saturday over a newly revealed 2005 video in which the Republican presidential nominee boasted about forcing himself on women.

"The words are demeaning. Such behavior is an abuse of power. It’s not lewd. It’s sexual assault," Biden said in a personally signed tweet.

First reported on Friday, the then-reality show star bragged in a 2005 behind-the-scenes video shot on the set of the soap opera "Days of Our Lives" about kissing women without their permission and grabbing them "by the p---y."

"I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait," Trump told television personality Bill Bush of the Republican presidential nominee's relationships with attractive women.

He added: "And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything."

For his part, Biden has made reducing sexual assault on college campus a cornerstone of his political career and President Barack Obama's second term.

The vice president in 2014 created an administration task force dedicated to studying and reducing violence against women on college campuses, and has spearheaded a White House-wide project not to visit colleges and universities that the administration deems insufficiently serious about tackling sexual assault.

Toronto's housing prices show no signs of slowing down

Toronto

While the Vancouver real estate market takes a moment, Toronto real estate showed no sign of slowing down. The latest statistics from the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) showed higher prices, strong demand for detached homes, and inventory continued to shrink.

Real Estate Prices Moved Higher

The benchmark average home climbed to $755,755, a 20.4% increase from the year prior. That’s a 6% increase from last month, which sounds a little odd when you realize it’s $11k/week. If that was too abstract, that’s $1,500 a day – 650% more than the median household makes at work in a day. There’s no way to predict how long this can go, but it’s hard to argue that Toronto real estate was a bad investment.

Higher Priced Units In Demand

Toronto buyers aren’t showing signs of a budget either. Most sales were for higher priced units, with a preference for detached homes. Detached homes were a whopping 47.5% of all sales, with an average price tag of $1,013,788. The median price was $830,000. Lower, but still 10x the median household income in Toronto.

Inventory Crunch

One of the main things sending buyers into a bidding frenzy is a lack of inventory. Inventory continued to decline, with new listings down 5.6% since last year. Active listings were also down 36.6%. This is being met with an increased number of deals, as sales are up 21.5% for the year.

Naturally, more people competing over less units will drive prices up. The strange thing is only 2 out of 3 new listings convert to deals. That’s hardly what we picture when we think of an inventory shortage, but perception is everything.

New Mortgage Rules

New mortgage rules come into effect on October 17, and will create more strict rules for lenders. This is expected to reduce demand for from new buyers, and lower priced homes. It’ll be interesting to see if this creates a last minute rush from buyers in October. If so, prices could see an even larger jump this month.

There’s also an equally good chance that buyers may not rush in. A new regulatory environment creates uncertainty, which may cause buyers to wait and see. Jumping in before the details isn’t always a smart idea, but that implies a logical market. When the average home in a city makes more than 6x the families living in them, it’s safe to say all logic is out the window.

Journeyman NFL quarterback shared a great picture of his daughter that shows how crazy his career has been

Josh McCown

Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown is the definition of a journeyman quarterback and he shared a great photo of his daughter and her friends showing just how wild of a ride it has been.

In 14 NFL seasons, McCown has spent time with nine different teams and that doesn't even include his one-year stint with the Hartford Colonials in the now defunct United Football League.

On Friday, McCown's teenage daughter had jersey day at school, where the kids wear sports jerseys. McCown's daughter and six of her friends wore seven different Josh McCown jerseys and it still didn't cover his entire career.

The seven jerseys represent six of the teams McCown played for, including Tampa Bay, Miami, Oakland, Chicago (twice, he wore two different numbers with the Bears), Cleveland, and Detroit.

McCown notes that two are missing, but he might have been thrown off by the two different Bears jerseys. The collection is actually missing Arizona, Carolina, and San Francisco (although he never appeared in a regular-season game for the 49ers).

While playing for nearly one-third of the NFL franchises is a wild ride, we shouldn't feel too bad for McCown. He has made $32.0 million in his career. Pretty good work if you can get it.

John McCain, the 2008 GOP nominee, withdraws support for Trump after 'boasts about sexual assaults'

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, withdrew his support for Donald Trump Saturday in response to the shocking leaked 2005 recording of the 2016 GOP nominee boasting about being able to "grab" women "by the p---y" because "when you're a star they let you do it."

The recording of Trump, which was picked up by a hot mic and published by The Washington Post on Friday, came from an interaction between Trump and television personality Billy Bush. In addition to his comments about grabbing women "by the p---y," Trump made a litany of other sexually suggestive remarks.

McCain said it was "impossible" to offer support to a candidate who "boasts about sexual assaults," going further in his language than the litany of other Republicans who withdrew their endorsements.

"In addition to my well known differences with Donald Trump on public policy issues, I have raised questions about his character after his comments on Prisoners of War, the Khan Gold Star family, Judge [Gonzalo] Curiel and earlier inappropriate comments about women," he said.

He was citing times Trump mocked the Arizona Republican's prisoner-of-war status, feuded with the parents of a slain Muslim US soldier, and ripped a federal judge for not being able to treat him fairly because of his heritage.

The Arizona senator is currently locked in a tight reelection battle.

"Just this week, he made outrageous statements about the innocent men in the Central Park Five case," McCain said, noting Trump's recent assertion that the group known as the "Central Park Five" was guilty of a late 1980s rape for which DNA exonerated them.

At the time, Trump took out a full-page ad in a the New York Times calling for the re-institution of the death penalty for the five men.

"As I said yesterday, there are no excuses for Donald Trump’s offensive and demeaning comments in the just released video; no woman should ever be victimized by this kind of inappropriate behavior," McCain said. "He alone bears the burden of his conduct and alone should suffer the consequences."

"I have wanted to support the candidate our party nominated," he continued. "He was not my choice, but as a past nominee, I thought it important I respect the fact that Donald Trump won a majority of the delegates by the rules our party set. I thought I owed his supporters that deference."

But the leaked recording was the final straw for McCain.

"Donald Trump’s behavior this week, concluding with the disclosure of his demeaning comments about women and his boasts about sexual assaults, make it impossible to continue to offer even conditional support for his candidacy," he said.

He added that his wife, Cindy, "with her strong background in human rights and respect for women," agrees with the decision.

"Cindy and I will not vote for Donald Trump," he said. "I have never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate and we will not vote for Hillary Clinton. We will write in the name of some good conservative Republican who is qualified to be President."

Trump addressed the matter in a Friday statement, in which he called the comments "locker room banter" and added that former President Bill Clinton has said "far worse to me on the golf course."

That was later followed by a late-night video address, offering a brief apology and saying he looked forward to the Sunday night presidential debate. He posted a tweet Saturday morning to call the past day "certainly ... interesting."

Almost immediately, Trump came under fire from those on both sides of the aisle — as many top Republicans either strongly condemned the comments or unendorsed the Manhattan billionaire altogether.

The 20 highest-paying jobs for women

The gender wage gap is pervasive in many industries, especially those still dominated by men.

But there are some fields where women not only make up a high percentage of the workforce, but they earn competitive pay doing it.

PayScale recently looked at occupations with the highest median pay for women with five to eight years of experience. To highlight jobs in which women frequently work, only those where at least 40% of workers identified as female were included.

A number of well-paying healthcare occupations feature high concentrations of women. More than 90% of nurse practitioners and almost half of general physicians are women, for example.

Check out the full list of jobs where women earn the most:

Where Donald Trump stands on the opioid epidemic

Trump Sustance Abuse 4x3

Over the past decade, the US has undergone an opioid epidemic. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has called it a “tremendous problem.”

As has been well-documented, the widespread prescription of opioids to treat pain and the subsequent diversion of said drugs for illicit uses created a sizable new population of users addicted to opioids.

Many of them turned to heroin, which became cheaper and more available, as the government cracked down on opioid prescribing.

The crisis has hit a number of states hard, including New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

It has made the epidemic — among other issues related to substance abuse and addiction — a hot-button issue in this presidential election.

Curtailing heroin abuse

Heroin use in the US has grown exponentially in recent years. The UN's "World Drug Report 2016" estimated that the number of heroin users in the US reached about 1 million in 2014, almost three times as many as in 2003.

Trump’s plan to combat heroin use in the US is built around his plan to build a wall on the border with Mexico, which he blames as “the source” of America’s opioid problem.

The expansion of heroin use has coincided with a shift in the source of heroin — from primarily Southeast Asia in 1994 to almost completely Mexico and South America by 2012. Yet experts say the heroin crisis has been primarily fueled by the explosion in demand for opioids as a whole, caused primarily by widespread overprescribing of opioids by doctors.

In the few times Trump has talked about the issue — specifically in hard-hit states like New Hampshire and Ohio — he has said that he will "stop the inflow of opioids into the US." But he has failed to go into further details.

“We’re going to have borders again, and we’re going to work with you people to help you solve that very big problem,” Trump said during his primary-victory speech in New Hampshire in February, referring to plans to secure “the Southern border.”

Trump has not spoken about policies to reduce demand for opioids or other drugs in the US.

Fixing the overdose crisis

In 2014, deaths from drug overdoses reached a new highof 47,055, according to a January report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — more than the number of people killed in car crashes or from gun violence.

The overdoses haven’t slowed. Synthetic opioids — such as fentanyl and carfentanil, which are 50 and 5,000 times more powerful than heroin, respectively — have become increasingly popular since 2014. This summer saw a flood of overdoses— likely involving synthetic opioids — overtake Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

While Trump has not addressed concerns over overdoses in his stated policies, he tweeted in August that “heroin overdoses are taking over our children and others in the MIDWEST. Coming in from our southern border. We need strong border & WALL!”

Trump hasn't addressed concerns over the skyrocketing price of naloxone.

Public-health reforms

Nearly 23 million Americans suffer from a substance-use disorder, while only about one-tenth of those addicted receive treatment, according to The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

At a town hall in Columbus, Ohio, in August, Trump spoke at length about the drug-addiction issue. While he focused his remarks on the heroin issues and its ties to Mexico, he did touch upon the need for treatment, saying:“It’s very hard to get out of the addiction of heroin. We’re going to work with them, we’re going to spend the money, we’re going to get that habit broken.”

Trump has not said where or how that money would be spent in treatment, nor has he addressed issues related to prescribing, treatment in healthcare, or the treatment gap specifically.

Tthe 2016 Republican Party platform acknowledges the link between overprescription of drugs and the current opioid epidemic. It cites Republican-backed legislation that limits patients on certain Medicare plans to a single pharmacy and coming out in support of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, which was signed by Obama in July. The platform also calls for CMS to ensure that physicians are not penalized for limiting opioid prescriptions.
