Budapest was once ruled by monarchs and Communists. Today, it’s the playground of twenty-something hipsters.

The graffiti-ridden District VII is the center of trends like “ruin pubs,” or abandoned buildings that have been converted into bars. In this travel video, watch me explore the labyrinthine pub Szimpla.

I rocked out at Sziget Music Festival, where Nick Cave and Bat For Lashes performed under a glowing Ferris wheel. To learn about the local food scene, Taste Hungary took me on a walking tour that included tastings of Unicum herbal liqueur and seven-layer Dobos cake.

The architecture reflects the city’s long and tumultuous history. Today, these century-old walls are covered with street art.



District VII is the hangout of hipsters. Kiraly and Kazinsky Streets are lined with indie shops and cafes.
